Conclusion

To conclude, these five presenters employ their personal techniques to their presenting because they have to consider who they are aiming at, what type of show they are on, and where the show is being aired; they also have to look at the demographic scale and study VALS so that they are aware of the audience background; and by adopting this form of research will assist them to present in the best suitable way.

The Role of a Presenter

A presenter’s role is to provide the audience additional information on a subject matter; they are there in order for the audience to gain a full understanding to what the topic contains. A presenter is there to inform the audience the latest news; this may include showbiz, political news, sports and more. This is because it applies to all the audience and in case some are only watching for a specific topic. The presenter has to read it from the auto queue as it provides all the information the audience needs to be aware of. However in some cases, if this was a chat show, the news would only cover ideally celebrity news and more unimportant issues. Furthermore, this all depends on who the show's aiming at and what they are on in terms of the demographic scale, this is how the production team will figure out how the show will be a success.

Examine Robin Roberts

Good Morning America – Robin Roberts
Robin Roberts is an American television broadcaster on ‘Good Morning America’, which is a morning television show on the ABC Network. The programme consists of news, talk, weather and special interest stories. It broadcasts on the ABC Family channel, owned by ABC Family Worldwide Inc., and also a minor of the Disney ABC Television Group as well as a detachment of the Walt Disney Company.
The ABC channel is a family channel therefore as an audience we instantly know what to expect from ‘Good Morning America’, we should be able to already know that the programme will consist of topics including gossip, music, Fashion and less report of events occurring in the broader world. Also, considering the show aims at families categorised at B-E on the demographics scale, it is presuming that the show won’t involve any sexual or severe news stories. The programme airs in the morning because the concept of show is to inform their target audience the latest news predominantly showbiz news and In order for the presenter to present this in the best accurate way, Robin would have studied the show as well as the channel, she would also have to come across as mature, determined and warm due to whom is watching the show.
Robin Roberts interviews Chris Brown
The presenter speaks very clear and sounds slightly formal. She also had like a motherly tone to her voice, and she was very clear and steady, she didn’t rush her words too much, instead, she expressed her words in a calmer tone due to what the topic was about, and because of how serious the subject matter was she had to converse in a more non-judgemental way so that he wouldn’t get offended.
In terms of language and vocabulary, she uses tactical words and questions to gain additional information about the incident the interviewee went through. An example of this was when the interviewee explained what the name of his album ‘F.A.M.E’ meant and as soon as he said it meant “forgiving all my enemies” she immediately rushes to ask him who he considers his enemies which again the presenter tries to relate the question back to the incident that occurred between the interviewee and his ex-girlfriend. The show airs at 7:00am which is another reason why the presenter had to perform in the way she did during the interview, she knew she had to take a pause at what she was doing as the interviewee could easily get angry which could lead to him swearing.
The presenter has an American accent and I believe she was selected to present on the show because of her warm personality and her ability to find a way to acquire answers from the person she is interviewing. As stated above, because the presenter comes across as warm and honest, she wore a bright yellow cardigan and the colour yellow usually represents the sun meaning the person is warm and lovely. Her outfit relates to the target audience because of the whole notion of the show; the programme airs at 7am which also happens to be the time where parents will start to get their children ready for school which means the presenters would have to look respectable yet relatable.
From the beginning, the presenter had a calm and relaxed facial expression, however towards the end, she realises that the interviewee was beginning to get annoyed by her constant interrogating so she quickly laughed it off and reassured him that the interview is to discuss the interviewee’s music.
The presenter’s body language was very straightforward and open, and in some parts she used a lot of hand gestures to emphasise words, however as she began to press some buttons she shouldn’t have, it was very noticeable that she felt a little uncomfortable because she knew that the interviewee was frustrated by her continuous questioning about his past. He claimed “I’ve been focusing on this album and definitely this album is what I wanted to talk about and not something that happened two years ago”. This statement definitely made the presenter wary of how uncomfortable he felt about the topic they were discussing. After hearing his comment she reacted quite false as she laughed it off and claimed she understood what he was trying to say. In addition, she repeated the phrase “thank you” as she didn’t want to come across as interfering and she didn’t want to make him feel nervous. After the interviewee made his response, she immediately moved on to his music and fans as she wanted to leave the interview with a positive note.
These things are appropriate to an audience because it’s explains a lot about the interviewee’s personality and displays other sides to him that the audience maybe surprised to see.
We are likely to see the presenter in a studio as her job role is more of a newsreader; we might also be able to see her attending award events. The presenter relates to the audience as she is not too formal yet informal either because she knows that she as well as the show is aiming at parents and children so she has to be able to apply her techniques to both audiences. She relates to the audience through her clothes, tone of voice, language and personality. She knows how to be serious but also humorous which is definitely desired for the show she presents on.
The show will primarily aim at middle aged women but it can also aim at children aged 8- 16 but this could vary depending on who the guest is on the show and the presenter is more likely to aim at women aged 30 and over as she is seen and classed as a humble sophisticated lady, in addition; she will also attract the thinkers, innovators and the believers.

Examine Keith Lemon

Celebrity Juice – Keith Lemon
Keith lemon is a well-known presenter who instantly comes across as bubbly and sarcastic; we are more likely to see him present on ‘Celebrity Juice’ which is a panel game show that appears every Thursday on ITV2. The show airs at 10pm; straight away this gives us an indication of what the show will comprise of. We as an audience should instantly be aware that the show will consist of swearing, nudity, sexual issues and unnecessary tabloid gossip just by judging it on the title, where it’s broadcast and the time it’s on. In this show, the presenter engages really well with the audience because the majority of them share the same sense of humour as him and since the show would have already studied their target audience it is a lot simpler for Keith to engage with them. The presenter is very out there, amusing, entertaining, and camp yet masculine, this is because he knows that his target audience are male and female predominantly in the C2-E category on the demographic scale, therefore he has to act overconfident and youthful but also be able to appeal to the older audience aged 25-34.
On ‘Celebrity Juice’ we see the presenter as an outgoing, loud, exaggerating character, however in the clip above that displays the presenter presenting in diverse way, he is a lot more calmer yet hilarious but not as much, this is because he is presenting on a day time TV show, therefore it is unacceptable for him to swear or behave the way he does on ‘Celebrity Juice’, another reason for this statement is also the fact that ‘This Morning’ has a distinctive audience to celebrity Juice, the show provides their audience vital issues that occurs around the world, though more or less Britain, unlike ‘Celebrity Juice’; in addition, the presenter has to tone down his over hyped personality in order for him to engage well with the show’s audience.
Keith Lemon is a character played by English comedian Leigh Francis and he is currently the main presenter on ITV2’s panel game show ‘Celebrity Juice’. The key concept of the show is to see which team identifies the week’s tabloid news stories.
The presenter’s voice is very exaggerated but comical and he speaks this way because it helps increases the audience laughter when he makes a joke. The tone of the presenter is very high and camp and because he’s always hyper it suits the role he’s playing. He talks really fast and he’s always enthusiastic and eager. He speaks this way because he is aware of who his target audience are, therefore he knows they will be able to relate to him and his voice. As this show aims at individuals at C2-E on the demographic scale, this type of voice will relate to the target audience personality, it will also be a lot easier for them to understand the show and the presenter.
In terms of language and vocabulary, there is a lot of slang used due to the presenter’s character and due to whom the show intends on aiming at. The words that are used are very informal and uncomplicated; as the show targets younger audience it is very expected to hear this kind of language used.
The presenter does have a catchphrase, in fact he has many; although it wasn’t used in this clip, there have been other episodes where it has been constantly used by the main presenter. The famous catchphrases from Keith Lemon are ‘Bang tidy’ and ‘Potato’, other catchphrase used is when he says “we are about to watch a VT and a VT stands for VIDEO TAPE”. When he’s about to say video tape, the audience in the studio and perhaps at home say it with him because we know that he’s going to say that as he has said it before numerous times in other episodes. The reason why he uses these catchphrases is merely for the audience to familiarise themselves with the presenter and his character as well as the show itself. Other purpose of his use of catchphrase is because he is also following the traits of the show.
The presenter has a fake Yorkshire accent and in my perspective, I believe whoever the presenter was going to be for the show, he/she is required to be loud, highly confident, annoying yet comical, able to engage well with the audience and be extremely sarcastic and Keith Lemon certainly ticks all the boxes, that’s why I think he was chosen to present on Celebrity Juice. I believe this accent is suitable for the show because of the issues discussed and because of the whole idea of the show. His accent encourages his humour and personality; therefore this will enhance his likability factor as well as the audience reaction to his performance.
The presenter’s outfit is very out there and so far from formal, it’s very casual and most of the time his outfits are so distinctive and unique that it instantly expresses his personality. Immediately, just by looking at his outfit, it’s very clear that he’s a comical character.
The presenter’s facial expressions are very extravagant and amusing, and it also increases the humour in his jokes as well as the audience’s interest.
These things are highly significant and appropriate to an audience as it comes very natural for us laugh because the jokes comes naturally from the presenter, therefore it’s easier for us to laugh as we know that he isn’t forcing it or over doing it. The presenter does exaggerate his jokes quite a lot; however it is exaggerated to a certain level where it is allowed and needed, plus the presenter emphasises a lot that the show is not to be taken seriously.
We are likely to see the presenter In a studio or on a stage presenting an award, in addition, we can also see him attend other chat or panel shows as he has previously been invited as a guest on Big Brother’s spin off show ‘Big Brother’s Little Brother’.

Keith Lemon also recently presented in another one of his show called ‘Lemonaid’. In this show we are presented with a slightly different Keith; he is more relaxed but still applies that enthusiastic approach with the audience, he is also less rude. He doesn’t use any offensive language or mention anything sexual. This is because the programme is more of a family show; it airs at 6pm on ITV1 which means he is unable to perform the way he does on Celebrity Juice, and instead he must tone down the rude aspect of his personality to a certain amount. The target audience for the show is children aged 6-15, nonetheless the show also appeals to parents aged 30 and above. On the show, he still comes across as hilarious but more or less helpful; the notion of the show is to offer people the chance to be able to do something they would never have dreamt of doing. An example of this is an episode where we witnessed Keith helping a 14 year old boy achieving one of his dreams, he set out a challenge for him and in exchange he won the opportunity to sing with one of his all time favourite opera singers. This episode revealed a kind side to Keith which instantly made us think differently about him. However, this is a must for him to act this way as he is targeting at a completely different audience to ‘Celebrity Juice’.

The presenter appeals to men and women aged 16-34 predominantly C2-E on the demographic scale and he will also appeal to the Makers, Strivers, survivors and the Experiencers.

Examine Alan Carr

Alan Carr is known for his comical personality and his outgoing character, the show ‘Chatty Man’ is award winning British comedy chat show and has been airing on channel 4 since May 2009; it is simply a chat show where the presenter invites famous celebrity guests to the studio and finds out the latest about them. We are likely to see the presenter present on his chat show ‘Chatty Man’ on Channel 4. On channel 4, we are presented with shows and documentaries that look at serious issues such as sexuality, racism, along with the channel’s only soap that also happen to cover these topics, it is almost as though, the channel is addressing a message to their audience that this is a channel that doesn’t judge people, therefore the show ‘Chatty Man’ is suitable for the network. In addition, because Alan Carr is openly Gay, it increases his likability scale and due to the fact that Channel 4 is very open minded about diversity, it helps enhance the presenters show to receive more viewers.
Alan Carr is very much identified as a comical character; he knows how to present in an interview where he can leave the audience entertained throughout, though we expect a lot from the presenter, it is simply because we believe he can always deliver in terms of keeping us amused.
Alan Carr interviews Jessie J
The presenter is very giddy and excited, plus the fact that he is very feminine and speaks really camp helps his personality to shine above other presenters, it also helps the guest stars to feel a lot more confident in the room as it is very noticeable that they can be themselves around him.
The sound of the presenter’s voice is very optimistic, amusing and likeable and it almost sounds ladylike; however this is a good thing for him because it is what attracts the audience to him, it is what increases the humour in his jokes and it is what helps him gain more viewers.
The presenter doesn’t apply formal language and vocabulary, it is more or less the other way round, his words are highly informal but this is due to whom he appeals to, instead he uses slang and common words, this is also what develops the pleasurable aspects of his character. He uses slang purely to relate to his target audience, his is very much aware that his target audience are young teenagers and adult which already gives him an indication of how to engage with them, he knows that slang is very common to the people he’s aiming at, therefore his going to undertake the use of slang in order to be more relatable.
The presenter has an East Midlands accent as he is originally from Northampton and I believe he has been selected to present this show because Alan Carr is very capable of instantly amusing the audience, the way he converse and the way he acts is very comical and since the genre of the show is Comedy, Alan was definitely the right man for the job as he is very chatty and with his captivating personality, he can acquire information from any celebrity. His accent is also relatable due to whom he’s aiming at; the show targets at men and women 16-34 who are classed as C2-E on the demographic scale, therefore his accent will be suitable for this variety of audience.
The presenter is dressed very casual, he’s wearing bright blue jeans and beige shoes, he also has the top button of his t-shirt open which means he is going for a smart yet casual look and I think it’s appropriate for the type of show he’s presenting on and the issues discussed. The usual topics on the show include the celebrity’s personal life as well as their career, so really it’s a mixture of business and pleasure.
The presenter’s facial expression is very funny and charismatic, it’s also very sarcastic but sometimes when he and the guest are discussing a more serious matter, he has a different facial expression; instead he has a sympathy look on his face.
The presenter’s body language is always excited, he is very confident because he is aware of how funny and likeable he is and in the introduction stage, he used a lot of hand gestures to emphasise what he means, and straight away he was already a hit with the audience and if they were laughing, the presenter will know that so will the audience at home because some of the target audience were in the studio.
These things are very appropriate to an audience because all of the techniques he used worked incredibly well that it constantly made the studio audience laugh the whole way through We are likely to see the presenter in a studio hosting his own show, however besides ‘Chatty Man’, Alan also attends arena tours where we are able to see him perform his comedy act on stage. The presenters will appeal to men and women aged 16-34 predominantly C2-E on the demographic scale; the presenter will also appeal to strivers, experiencers, survivors and makers.
Another show we have seen Alan’s presenting skills would be on Comic Relief. In this series we witnessed Alan present in a dissimilar way to Chatty Man; this is because of the concept of the show and who it aims at. The show is about raising money for the people in need and as the show primarily aims at children and parents, it is very expected of Alan to present in a less dramatic way, instead he must be more sympathetic yet relatable.

Examine Steve Jones

Steve Jones is a welsh presenter who is primarily well known for his presenting work on T4. The show broadcasts on channel 4 from 9am-2pm on a Saturday as well as Sundays from 9am-5pm. These two channels are owned by Channel Four Television Corporation. During his time at T4, he would also appear in T4 Special episodes which are a point where the show would primarily focus on one topic.
Channel 4 programmes are comprised with shows that aim at youths and the younger adults; this also goes for the channel in general. Furthermore, because T4 also aims at both male and female, perhaps more female ranking within C2-E on the demographic scale who are possibly strivers, experiencers, makers and survivors, it is Steve’s duty to present in a way where his target audience can fully understand his character and be entertained; therefore his sarcastic, flirty, cool and hilarious personality is highly essential if he wants to appeal to his target audience.
Steve Jones interviews Taylor Lautner
In this interview, he speaks as if he’s excited to interview the interviewee, he was also steady and calm as he didn’t feel pressured even though he was interviewing an A- list Hollywood actor. He was quite straightforward but sometimes would focus on one question than others, he had a fast pace simply because he only had six minutes to ask all the question and he managed to receive open answers for all of them .
The sound of his voice was very friendly and outgoing which was suitable for that occasion, and the fact that he had a welsh accent made his character funnier, his was also a bit giddy because the interviewee kept answering his questions with a humorous manner. An accent is good for presenting but this depends on what the concept of the show is and who the target audience are. The reason why an accent is good is because it enables the audience to find the presenter and the show interesting, it allows them to be able to relate to the presenter which is also the main purpose of presenting; once the audience find you relatable, it keeps the show going and allows the presenter to be themselves.
He didn’t overdo the interview by applying big words, instead he used understandable words where both the interviewee and the audience can comprehend the questions he asked. He used simplistic language because initially the target audience for the show are mostly teenagers; therefore it is his responsibility to adapt his words to an understandable level so that the audience can meet him half way.
He brings out the funny side in people and he also has this thing about him that assures me that I would feel comfortable talking to him. Also, Steve Jones is very well known in the public’s eye due to his reputation of being a player, this would help the show receive more ratings as he is already very famous in the media.
The presenter was wearing a casual coloured T-shirt and bright blue skinny jeans; this is simply because he targets a younger audience, and he has to be able to come across as casual in order for him to relate to them, additionally the outfit immediately increases his likability scale. The special episode was concentrated on the new Twilight movie and because the show and movie target the same age range, therefore the presenter’s outfit was very suitable for that event.
The presenter’s facial expression is very happy and excited, during the interview; it is also suitable for the time of day the show is on. The presenter had a smile on his face the whole time; this is because he wanted to ensure the interviewee is comfortable and enjoying himself. To do this, he added sarcasm and funny comments along the way.
These things are highly appropriate to the audience especially if the presenter wants a good outcome, these techniques are the key to a good interview and Steve Jones applied these methods because he knew that considering the age range the show aims at, he was aware that there would be a lot of teenagers watching the interview and a lot of Taylor Lautner fans, therefore it was the presenter’s responsibility to bring out the fun and interesting side of the interviewee’s character.

Another programme he recently presented on was the X Factor USA. The clip above displays how differently he presents in comparison to T4; on the show he is more serious and focused, he wasn't as flirty or comical. Other areas of his presenting that differed was his clothing; he is more formal and less casual, also the tone of voice was slightly different to how he would converse on T4. Furthermore, it is very noticeable that his accent was tone down to a certain level in order for the audience to understand what he was expressing. As his welsh accent is very strong, he needed to ensure it was understandable yet appealing. This transformation is caused by the fact that X Factor USA’s target audience is a lot different to T4’s target audience. For instance, the show will appeal to a wider audience due to its concept. In addition, because it will consist of older audiences, this means that Steve Jones had to change some aspects of his presenting.

The presenter will appeal to the teenagers and the younger adult and perhaps women in their middle age. I’d say that the age range for this presenter is 16-35 predominantly women at C2 – E on the demographic scale. The presenter would also interest the strivers, experiencers, makers and the survivors.

Jeremy Kyle

The purpose of this show is simply to help families resolve their issue; this may be about drugs, children, cheating scandals and many more. To help find a solution to their problems, the show includes lie detectors, drug test as well as DNA tests. In addition the presenter ‘Jeremy Kyle’ also applies his counselling skills to get to the bottom of their problems, and sometimes with the help of the studio audience’s chants, it usually helps the guests to rethink how their situation became as bad as it is in the first place.

Jeremy Kyle is known for his unique presenting on his Day time reality TV show ‘The Jeremy Kyle Show’. The show’s concept is to explore individuals and their lifestyle and how their problems can be solved by Jeremy Kyle. The presenter presents in a distinctive mode as he is faced with different people with varied baggage every day, it is his duty to respond to them in a strict manner in order to get to the bottom of their circumstances as well as to keep the audience entertained at the same time. The show is aired on ITV1 which is vastly popular for being an entertainment network; therefore we instantly know that the show will cover that range. As the show aims at male and female aged 16-34 predominantly C1-E on the demographic scale, it is only expected that the show will cover storylines that will interest the target audience. In addition to this statement, the show introduces a lot of shocking storylines that leaves us wanting more onwards; these storylines can be relative to the audience and because of how realistic and convincing the whole thing is, it allows us to feel intrigued every time we switch it on.

In the majority of the episodes in Jeremy Kyle, it is expected of the presenter to shout and be confidently strict; this is because the audience know that the show will provide them a dramatic storyline so therefore, the way he speaks to the guests is needed. The tone of the presenter’s voice is very sharp and on point, and sometimes when the guests isn't listening to him or talking over him, all of a sudden the anger in Jeremy unleashes as he is desperate to get his point across to both the guests and the audience; additionally he has this tone of voice simply to mirror the reaction of the audience. Furthermore, in some cases were the storyline might be a humorous one, although he doesn't necessarily laugh with them, he is instead laughing at them but in a way where the guest’s believes he might be laughing with them. In these sorts of cases Jeremy uses sarcastic comments where only the audience finds it hilarious because they know that he is laughing at the guest. This is also because Jeremy articulates what the audience are thinking.

An example of this statement is the clip above where it displays Jeremy in a more uncomplicated situation; usually we do rely on the guest and Jeremy to bring out the humorous side of the storyline, however in this clip it was more or less the main guest who was continuously making the jokes due to his character and his overconfidence about his relationship with his fiancĂ©. Whilst his constant jokes were humoring both the audience and the presenter, it was later on when Jeremy introduced the guest’s fiancĂ© to the stage that led him to be in control as he spoke to her in a strict matter due to fact that he was eager to discover why she is still with him. The reason why the presenter speak with such manner is because he tries to get all the facts from both guests in order to finally find a way to solve the situation, although sometimes we don’t know whether the problem has been solved or not, however Jeremy leaves them with an ultimatum for them to think about and he also lets them decide where they want to go from there.

1.    The sound of the presenter’s voice is sharp and affirmative, the tone of his voice is very fast because he’s trying to ensure that the guests realise how bad their problem has become, he also has a strong pace which is what brings out his confidence to ask the questions he asks, it is almost as though he is trying to tell them that he is not afraid to confront them about their problems.

2.    The language and vocabulary used weren't very formal and was more or less very straightforward, in this episode he would use quotes from the guest and bring it up on stage just to clarify what he/she meant. He would also sometimes repeat what they’ve just said so that the guest can tell us what exactly they meant. He also uses casual words so that the target audience can fully understand what the storyline is about, in addition the show aims at people aged C1 – E on the demographic scale therefore slang is desired.

3.    The presenter has a South East accent which perfectly suits his voice especially with the notion of the show, In my perspective, I believe Jeremy Kyle has been selected to present the show purely because of his character and what he is able to offer, although the show broadcasts some intense storyline, the presenter always finds a way to make it to humor and entertain us due to his constant questioning. I also think he’s perfect for the show because he’s got a huge confidence in him where he’s sees the storylines as a challenge and even when he is faced with a lot of difficult guests; it’s his confidence that allows him to interview them in the most accurate way. In addition, he walks around the studio almost ‘strutting’ full of confidence.

Visual Techniques

In the clip the presenter is dressed very formal, however when he was presenting in Manchester, he was dressed in a casual way. The reason why he dresses formal in the studio is because of the concept of the show as well as the fact that it also happens to appear on day time TV and airs on ITV1, additionally the majority of the male presenters on ITV1 usually dress formal and this is regardless of whether the show airs on day time or the evening. To clarify, Jeremy Kyle dresses formal on the programme merely because he is following the traits of the show and the channel.

On this show, Jeremy Kyle generally has the same expression on his face in each episode, this is because most of the storylines on the show is very outrageous and shocking, and usually most of the guests on the show have similar personality, therefore it is expected that the presenter will have the same facial expression on his face.

The presenter’s body language is always sharp and he looks as though he is ready to solve the guests problems, he sometimes begins the show by being calm especially when he’s giving the audience a quick brief about who he’s about to bring out and what their storyline involves. In this specific clip, I’d say that Jeremy was a lot more relaxed and calm, and when he sat down in the beginning, he was crossing his legs just like the guest was, this clearly displayed that he was very interested in the storyline and the guest’s character. However, when he brought out the guest’s wife, he was a bit sharp with her as he really wanted to know why she was still with her partner knowing all the things he had done to her.

These things are appropriate to the audience because it is what encourages the show to be amusing and engaging and without all the methods the presenter uses, he and the show wouldn't be as good and entertaining.
We are likely to see the presenter in the studio unless he is doing a special episode; this is when we can find presenting outside of the studio.

The presenter will appeal to men and women aged 16-40 predominantly C1-E on the demographic scale. This presenter would also attract the survivors, experiencers and the makers. Although Jeremy Kyle is very distinctive to the other presenters above, he does have his way of capturing the people’s attention, therefore he will appeal to this target audience because of his ironic approach and his relatable personality.
