Steve Jones is a welsh presenter who is primarily well known for his presenting work on T4. The show broadcasts on channel 4 from 9am-2pm on a Saturday as well as Sundays from 9am-5pm. These two channels are owned by Channel Four Television Corporation. During his time at T4, he would also appear in T4 Special episodes which are a point where the show would primarily focus on one topic.
Channel 4 programmes are comprised with shows that aim at youths and the younger adults; this also goes for the channel in general. Furthermore, because T4 also aims at both male and female, perhaps more female ranking within C2-E on the demographic scale who are possibly strivers, experiencers, makers and survivors, it is Steve’s duty to present in a way where his target audience can fully understand his character and be entertained; therefore his sarcastic, flirty, cool and hilarious personality is highly essential if he wants to appeal to his target audience.
Steve Jones interviews Taylor Lautner
In this interview, he speaks as if he’s excited to interview the interviewee, he was also steady and calm as he didn’t feel pressured even though he was interviewing an A- list Hollywood actor. He was quite straightforward but sometimes would focus on one question than others, he had a fast pace simply because he only had six minutes to ask all the question and he managed to receive open answers for all of them .
The sound of his voice was very friendly and outgoing which was suitable for that occasion, and the fact that he had a welsh accent made his character funnier, his was also a bit giddy because the interviewee kept answering his questions with a humorous manner. An accent is good for presenting but this depends on what the concept of the show is and who the target audience are. The reason why an accent is good is because it enables the audience to find the presenter and the show interesting, it allows them to be able to relate to the presenter which is also the main purpose of presenting; once the audience find you relatable, it keeps the show going and allows the presenter to be themselves.
He didn’t overdo the interview by applying big words, instead he used understandable words where both the interviewee and the audience can comprehend the questions he asked. He used simplistic language because initially the target audience for the show are mostly teenagers; therefore it is his responsibility to adapt his words to an understandable level so that the audience can meet him half way.
He brings out the funny side in people and he also has this thing about him that assures me that I would feel comfortable talking to him. Also, Steve Jones is very well known in the public’s eye due to his reputation of being a player, this would help the show receive more ratings as he is already very famous in the media.
The presenter was wearing a casual coloured T-shirt and bright blue skinny jeans; this is simply because he targets a younger audience, and he has to be able to come across as casual in order for him to relate to them, additionally the outfit immediately increases his likability scale. The special episode was concentrated on the new Twilight movie and because the show and movie target the same age range, therefore the presenter’s outfit was very suitable for that event.
The presenter’s facial expression is very happy and excited, during the interview; it is also suitable for the time of day the show is on. The presenter had a smile on his face the whole time; this is because he wanted to ensure the interviewee is comfortable and enjoying himself. To do this, he added sarcasm and funny comments along the way.
These things are highly appropriate to the audience especially if the presenter wants a good outcome, these techniques are the key to a good interview and Steve Jones applied these methods because he knew that considering the age range the show aims at, he was aware that there would be a lot of teenagers watching the interview and a lot of Taylor Lautner fans, therefore it was the presenter’s responsibility to bring out the fun and interesting side of the interviewee’s character.
Another programme he recently
presented on was the X Factor USA. The clip above displays how differently he
presents in comparison to T4; on the show he is more serious and focused, he wasn't as flirty or comical. Other areas of his presenting that differed was his
clothing; he is more formal and less casual, also the tone of voice was slightly
different to how he would converse on T4. Furthermore, it is very noticeable
that his accent was tone down to a certain level in order for the audience to
understand what he was expressing. As his welsh accent is very strong, he
needed to ensure it was understandable yet appealing. This transformation is
caused by the fact that X Factor USA’s target audience is a lot different to T4’s
target audience. For instance, the show will appeal to a wider audience due to its
concept. In addition, because it will consist of older audiences, this means
that Steve Jones had to change some aspects of his presenting.
